Week 5: It's Not How Much You Know, It's How Much You Care!

Week 5: Show You Care and Never Stop!

11/12/17

This was a featured post I did on Facebook earlier in the week but I feel this is a big topic when it comes to how successful a person can be in the fitness industry world. I've have only been a certified personal trainer/fitness coach for five years now so I still have so much to learn and grow but one tip I have picked up over the years has helped me get to where I am today.

Every trainer wants to have a full book with a number of clients. The more clients, the more sessions. The more sessions, the more money. The more money, the better lifestyle. But how does a trainer get so many clients? Trust me, I've been there before. A new trainer starting off is usually thrown to the wolves by a gym and they tell him/her "ok kid, go get your clients." That usually leads to a nervous breakdown and after so many rejections of people not wanting to spend their hard earned money on a rookie trainer, that person usually decides that this career isn't for them as there is no money to be made. Sure, experience is important, but the one thing people want more than experience is they want to know that they are being cared for. But, its not just for personal training everyone, it's with almost every job you do dealing with customer service or even everyday relationships with your family, friends, and significant other.

When showing that you care it really doesn't have to be much at all. When I'm training someone I think of it more as forming a relationship with a person rather than a session. I like to pretend also like I'm a therapist because when people see that you care about them, they will start to get more personal and will open up about other things.

Some tips I like to use to show that I care to clients are:
- Remember names (theirs, their wife's, their kids, other family, pets)
- Ask about events that happen in their life and then the next time you see them bring it up without them having to remind you of it
- Be creative in your sessions. Do your research and then find some exercises of combinations they haven't seen before.
- Never repeat an exercise, unless you are retesting to see if results improve, or unless the like a specific exercise or tell you. Always give them something new
- Greet them. Call them by name. Smile the whole time. Never be uninterested. Yes everyone has bad days but don't bring that to the session. They can because they are paying you. Try to make their day better!

Caring is everything. I treat each session the same. Yes, you will like training some clients more than others but each person is just as important and they deserve that respect and caring every time you interact with them!

Guys have a good rest of your weekend and a good start to your week!

Best,

Ryan
